Whitewright FFA members attend State Convention in Houston

Two Whitewright Future Farmers of America members Darrell Dyer and Jimmy Worsham left Tuesday to attend the State FFA Convention in Houston from July 14 to 16. They were accompanied by Jack Rogers, the chapter advisor, who accompanied the students as voting representative.

Langner Lays Antarctic Life Out At Rotary Meeting

Lt Col William K Langner USAF retired told Whitewright Rotary about flying supplies to McMurdo Station on Antarctica 1400 mile Christchurch flight and living two years as operations officer on a shelf of ice. He described Operation Deep Freeze and showed slides and a movie detailing supply difficulties.

Fire destroys Gibson home in three-alarm blaze on Walnut Street

A Saturday night fire destroyed the R M Gibson residence on Walnut Street, causing total loss of the 12 room two story house and its contents. No injuries were reported and officials suspect an electrical cause. The blaze drew Whitewright, Tom Bean, and Bells fire departments, with the structure declared under control around midnight. The home, built circa 1900, was a local historical landmark and remains vacant as the owner arranges temporary housing.

Bids Placed for Sewage Plant as Whitewright Replaces Water Pump

City officials reviewed three bids for the new sewage plant with lowest offer from Shellenberger Construction of Sherman at 129822.35 dollars, followed by Cole and Smith of Denison at 145590 and Ruff Construction of Dallas at 157000. Rady and Associates will review before acceptance. East well pump replaced after five days down. cost about 1200 dollars. Fire near Gibson home tested water use and prompted thanks to nearby departments and law enforcement for traffic control.

Vacation Church School Ends With Picnic At Church

The First United Methodist Church wrapped up its Vacation Church School with a Saturday morning picnic. Fifty-six students enrolled, about 50 on average attended, and $30.71 was raised for the Children’s Fund for Christian Missions. Betty Burleson directed activities with Alice Judd on piano and Bill Grisham assisting, along with a list of teachers including Sue Brinkley Judy Wolfe Linda Sullivan Martha Brookshear Edna Campbell Kay Burleson Debbie Bush Phyllis Earnheart Lisa Earnheart Kathy Wilson Gina Judd Susie Bow and Regina Bartley. Forty eight people joined the church picnic lunch.
