Cox and Roosevelt Win Nominations at Democratic Convention
In San Francisco on July 6 James M. Cox was nominated for president after a long deadlock, with Franklin D. Roosevelt named by acclamation for vice president. Cox, three time Ohio governor, led through a series of ballots as Palmer and McAdoo factions shifted, finally winning on the forty fourth ballot and unopposed after Colorado's vote. A San Francisco dispatch notes Cox's rise from printer’s devil to newspaper publisher and congressman, highlighting his work on workers compensation and child labor laws and noting his birth in 1870 in Butler County and his plans to retire to a farm near Jacksonburg.

Boy on Bill Everheart farm kills sister in accident
Lonnie Smith, about nine, left in charge of his three year old sister on a northern town farm. He found a 45 caliber pistol, shot her in the eye, killing her instantly then hid the body in weeds and fled. He was later found at a nearby Negro house two miles away. Some believe the deed was deliberate after being left to care for the child, though no charges were filed at press time.
