Remembering the First Passenger Train Near Whitewright
A reminiscence from about 25 years ago recalls the first passenger train stopping 8 miles north of Whitewright around June 1979. Neighbors hosted a picnic by the bridge north of town with Mrs. Phillips, Mrs. Joe May, Mrs. Montgomery, and Geo. Clemmons among attendees. The party included fried chicken and watermelons as railroad officials, the telegraph operator, and assistants boarded the train, then headed north. The writer recalls moving to Whitewright and cherishing neighbors and church memories, recalling a poet’s line about roses and a hymn sung by Brother Jenkins.
