Texas Good Roads Association directors vote to study higher speed limits on four lane divided highways. A committee will report in May on whether Highway Department should be given authority to speed zone the system above 60 mph on suitable roads. A second committee will analyze current highway needs, focusing on future farm road program, with a May report.
The games scheduled for Friday at Whitewright gymnasium are moved to Thursday due to the Golden Gloves boxing tournament in Sherman Friday night. Leonard teams face Whitewright in both boys and girls play with the girls at 7 pm and the boys to follow.
Gov Price Daniel proclaims January 24 to 30 as Pay Your Poll Tax Week urging qualified citizens to vote in the 1960 elections. He notes a year of political significance with elections for President Congress state and local offices. The poll tax deadline is January 31.
A six day cold spell in Florida damaged tender vegetables and killed crops. about 5,000 of 7,000 migrant farm workers lost work, with tomatoes, beans, cucumbers, squash in mucklands near Lake Okeechobee and Miami hardest hit. Potatoes in North Florida also killed as temperatures fell to 18 degrees in the north and central regions and 26 in the south.
Uncle Dan describes a town meeting where Clem Webster explains pork barrel spending as hound dog psychology. The editor notes how Congressmen barking leads to empty coffers and new taxes, then reflects on aging, arthritis, and shifting views from rheumatism to arthritis and debates on origins since the atom bomb.
The Whitewright Salvation Army unit reports aid to residents includes groceries clothing boys to summer camp transportation and other services for the past year. Dan Eddy of Dallas thanked local committee Charles Ayres Roy G Blanton John Biggerstaff Tom Sears for support. Ayres announced Roy G Blanton as treasurer filling Sears Anderson’s vacancy. Biggerstaff also serves as camp chairman. The unit participates in the Whitewright Community United Fund.
Grayson County commissioner Wayne Bruce opened bids for fuel and lubricants for Precinct 2 showing potential yearly savings of about 5 500 if the low bid from Hooper Oil Co. of Denison is accepted. Other commissioners will not bid at this time. Bruce also explores a county garage could save up to 50 000 annually.
Washington reports after 25 years in Congress Graham A. Barden of North Carolina announced he would not seek re election. Under seniority Adam Clayton Powell of New York emerges as next in line to chair the Education and Labor Committee amid clashes on labor and civil rights.
Park and Oranges Head Plentiful Foods as February lists from the U S Department of Agriculture show abundant pork oranges and orange products in Texas crops this winter. Also plentiful are broiler fryers lamb lard eggs and peanuts with cabbage carrots potatoes onions grapefruit cranberry products and raisins.
Whitewright Chamber of Commerce elects Kenneth W. Frisby as president and Dr. Paul E. Geers as vice president at its annual meeting. Clyde Little remains secretary treasurer with three new directors Bill Pettit C P Dawson and Lokey Edwards joining the board. Expenditures and receipts for 1959 show dues, printing, refreshments and banquet costs with a year end balance cited.
Governor Daniel announced a long range study of Texas finances to predict needs for at least ten years and to propose funding methods. He plans a citizen populated committee with some state board members and use of Legislative Council and Texas Research League resources.
Dr. E Cuyler Hammond of the American Cancer Society told a San Francisco audience that smoking may cause more deaths from heart disease than from lung cancer. A survey showed higher death rates among smokers with 52.1 percent of excess deaths due to heart disease and 13.5 percent to lung cancer.
