Sunday January 26 Youth Sunday at First Baptist Church Whitewright with youth teaching all Sunday School classes and a youth superintendent. Will Cureton is featured speaker for the youth service and Kelley Armstrong of Celeste speaks in the evening. Youth Choir will provide special music.
Community news recounts visits to ill Bill Roberson in Lubbock and Mrs. Lillian Neathery in Denison. Youth Day at Whitewright First Baptist is announced with Will Cureton delivering the message. Bells FFA members attend Fort Worth Exposition with Youree exhibiting a steer. Club elections name Mickey Wagoner president. Cub Scouts host Pine Wood Derby and award badges. Various residents host guests and travel between Sherman, Denison, Trenton, Greenville and Cannon townships.
High School agriculture teachers told the Rotary Club of Whitewright that the Future Farmers of America program builds better citizens. Jack Rogers and Bob Darwin described leadership, cooperation, and profitable projects as core goals, with 19 students in the cooperative program this year.
Grayson County and Texas county leaders convene for the 17th annual County Judges and Commissioners Conference at Texas A&M Inn Feb 5–6. The program opens with Raymon Thompson, followed by remarks from TAMU President Williams and keynote Reagan Brown.
Larry Franklin completed a 30 day leave from Germany and reported to Fort Riley Kansas where he will be stationed for six months. His wife Joyce remains with her parents Mr and Mrs Joy Morris and Mr and Mrs Louis Franklin.
Grayson County American Red Cross board meeting at Austin College discussed a Basic Life Support Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation course. Dr. Daniel Schores led the invocation and Dr. Mack R. Broiles chaired the business session. Larry Cruise resigned. Frances Cameron of Denison and Carla Spicer, a Grayson County Junior College student, were elected to fill vacancies and join the board.
Lieut. Col. William K. Langner of Bells addressed the Town and Country Club meeting in Fireman's Hall. He discussed the North Polar Region and Antarctica with films from the 1960s exploration and Operation Deep Freeze.
The Whitewright Chamber of Commerce named a Bicentennial Committee at a Monday meeting with 15 members present. Appointees include Clint Hennig Dick Capps Edith Jester and Milton Simpson. A membership drive will occur in March and a banquet is planned for April 12 with details handled by Mike Herber Joe Cureton and others.
Whitewright residents attended the World War I Veterans Barracks 81 meeting at Grayson County Courthouse Saturday. Mr. Curtis led the ceremonies. Mrs. Winnie Mae Gaunt heads the Ladies Auxiliary Collee. cookies were served to 43 attendees.
The Jr. Hi Kittens lost 41 to 23 to Fannindel in a district game. Reid Pittman led with 11 points while Fannindel’s King scored 18. Coach Mark Kline said his team played hard but the breaks didn’t come. The Kittens now stand 6 and 2 this season.
The Whitewright Jr. Tigerettes defeated Fannindel by technical default in the third quarter, after the Fannindel coach accumulated three technical fouls and refused to leave. Whitewright led 28 to 12 when play ended, with Debbie Franklin scoring 14 and Cheryl Hicks eight. The team stands 7 wins and 1 loss.
Hayden Fry, North Texas State football coach and athletic director, spoke at Whitewright High School’s All-Sports Banquet. He urged champions to work hard, believe in themselves, want greatness, and stay motivated, recounting meeting President Ford and highlighting NT program impact. Odell Carraway received a plaque as No. 1 Tiger fan.
Nomination period for the 1975 Rural Heroism Award runs to Feb 21 with winners to be honored Mar 3 at the Shamrock Hilton Hotel in Houston. Eligible acts must occur on farms or ranches during 1974 and include a detailed incident report.
Mrs. R C Vestal 88 died Tuesday in a Whitewright nursing home. Funeral services will be held Friday at Barnhart Chapel with Rev. Fred Waldrup and Rev. Douglas Rymer. burial in Oak Hill. Survivors include seven sons and seven daughters, 34 grandchildren and 19 great grandchildren.
State Rep. Bill Sullivant of Gainesville introduced an emergency measure to allow Texas to tap federal funds for extended unemployment benefits. The bill would route about 5 million dollars to unemployed Texans at no cost to employers or the state, with a January 20, 1975 deadline for implementing legislation. The House approved the measure and sent it to the Senate where Sen. A M Aikin of Paris backed a companion bill. The governor was to sign before the deadline.
The Tom Bean High School Career Exploration Class plans a school newspaper titled Tom Bean Times. Mrs. Bob Cox of Grayson County College teaches the journalism study with freshman students and a nine week daily meeting schedule. Dale Neal News serves as managing editor and Cheryl Montgomery handles advice work as a volunteer.
The Texas Farm Bureau will stage a joint legislative conference and 1975 membership kickoff January 28-29 at the Driskill Hotel in Austin. Carrol Chaloupka of Dalhart, the president, says 21 county Farm Bureaus are invited with presidents and committee chairs to attend.
Grayson County seniors may receive a free monthly newsletter starting February from the Grayson County extension service. The first issue covers nutrition and foods for seniors, with topics chosen by reader interests. To receive it, call or write Mrs Terry ieese at the County extension office in the Sherman Courthouse. The free service is offered by the Texas Agricultural Extension Service to all regardless of race or creed.
The Tom Bean community 4 H club held its first meeting January 14 at the community center and elected officers. President Gary Baze, Vice President Larry Baze, Secretary Lori Beall, Treasurer Gena Cravens, Reporter Kelly McCauley, Council Delegate Lori Beall, Activity Chair Richie Cravens, Refreshment Chair Ricky Hodge. Next meeting set for January 28 at 3 30 PM at the same center.
Technical Sergeant Arthur H. Mitchell has graduated from the Air Training Command Noncommissioned Officer Academy at Lackland AFB Texas. He is an accounting and finance supervisor at Reese AFB Texas and a 1959 graduate of Whitewright High School. His wife Elizabeth is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Robert Morris of Whitewright.
Bells High School held a secret ballot naming Tammy Harris Miss BHS. Mark Youree and Stephen Cook earned honors, with Cindy Arnold titled Miss Intelligence and Harris selected as the senior class favorite.
