Winter weather amused some residents as snow and froze rain changed plans. Utility workers feared further ice, while gas meter crews dug through snow. Citizens debated poll tax rules, and public safety, fire, and polio fund appeals peppered the local chatter.
John Biggerstaff, local chairman, announces Whitewright’s per capita goal of 35 cents for the March of Dimes campaign. He appoints committee chairs for porchlight soliciting, business coin boxes, schools, extracurriculars, and fund custody. Last year Whitewright raised $661.19, the county’s top per capita total.
Thomas Woodson Bennett brother of G D Bennett of Whitewright died in a Wichita Falls automobile accident Saturday night. His Burkburnett home is survived by his wife Vivie Lee Pace and four children. Funeral services were held in Burkburnett with relatives from Floydada Houston Savoy, Duncan and Randlett in attendance. He was born July 20 1889, a Baptist and I O O F member. Survivors include two sons two daughters two brothers two sisters seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Charles Alan Hill infant son of Mr and Mrs Roland Hill of Leon ard and formerly Whitewright died Saturday and was buried Sunday in Van Alstyne Cemetery born Oct 1 1955 he is survived by his parents a brother Roland Dale Hill and grandparents Mr and Mrs A B Edwards of Van Alstyne
COLLEGE STATION Texas farmers and ranch operators may file income tax reports by February 15 1956 instead of January 31 1956. The extension applies to farm and ranch operators though farm employers who owe two percent employer tax and two percent employee tax must file Form 943 and pay by January 31 1956 to avoid penalties for late filing.
Reno Triplett a Sherman druggist aged 43 was given a two year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to murder without malice in the traffic death of Mrs Edna Claspil who died after being struck by his car on Armstrong avenue in Denison on April 3 at 2 p m in a local hospital shortly after the collision.

Grayson County Commission ers Court approved pay boosts for about 139 employees ranging from 10 to 25 dollars per month totaling approximately 21 660 dollars. Elected officials had already received a 25 percent raise, with breakdowns showing 66 receiving 10, 68 receiving 15, and five including four road foremen and the county maintenance engineer getting 25 dollars.
The Census Bureau reports the average value of U S farm land and buildings at about 84 dollars per acre and the average farm value at 19 706 dollars based on 1954 agriculture data. Warren McDonald Jep Fuller Kilmer Corbin and Rogers Kelly also reported fees ranging from 350 to 4800, with criticism of the Insurance Commission and calls for a broad probe.
Arthur Godfrey's chief talent scout Paul Blaufox said he resigned. A source close to the show claimed he was fired earlier this week. CBS had no comment and Godfrey remained silent. Also noted is the fact that more than half the world's railway mileage is government owned.
Sherman Jaycees mobile unit will be in Whitewright Saturday January 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. to issue poll tax receipts at 1.75 dollars for qualified voters. Whitewright no longer has a city poll tax. A state county poll tax receipt is required for voting in any election.
The government and 60 manufacturers back a $600 million private promo push to spur 1956 home repairs and improvements. Targeting two of every five homes at risk of slums, the effort combines ads direct mail and promotions with the slogan 56 The Year to Fix. It aims to educate homeowners on how to proceed and revive demand as new housing starts fall.
