President Eisenhower presented to Congress the largest peacetime budget, 73.934 billion dollars for the 1959 fiscal year starting July 1. The plan dedicates most spending to national defense and missiles, while proposing tax and debt measures and a lean civilian side. The budget aims to meet Soviet threats with expanded space and defense programs, amid economic slack and a projected small deficit this year.

Ville Woodson attended the evangelistic conference to hear Dr. R G Wee. The conference meets Tuesday to Wednesday noon. Over 100 attended the Zone 3 youth rally at the church Monday night. Charles Key presided Rev Roy Cloudt delivered the message. Ida won the attendance banner with games and basement refreshments. Mrs Jimmy Anderson Mrs Carl Caraway Mrs W A Watkins Jr and Mrs William Wilson served refreshments. Mr and Mrs Lloyd Alexander are counselors for the young people Fred Waldrop.
Wolfe City high school hosts Whitewright for a boys and girls basketball doubleheader Friday. Whitewright schedule shows Jan and Feb road and home games including District Tournament prep. Whitewright teams recently fell to Leonard 49 27 for boys and 38 27 for girls while Bells pushed the boys 41 39 and girls 26 24. The Whitewright rosters list players for both squads with Don Walker and Jean Scott among named members.
Funeral services were held in Sherman for Earl Hill 63 who died in a Dallas hospital from injuries suffered in a December traffic accident. The service was conducted by Ralph Russell with burial in West Hill Cemetery. Survivors include his wife two daughters a daughter-in-law a brother a sister and nine grandchildren.
Jonathan Routh of Trenton died at his home at age 96 after a long residence in the town. He was the uncle of Dr. John A. Ray of Whitewright.
A Burlington contest honors assorted tall tales with honorable mention awards. David F. Boone of Marshall Texas is cited for a humorous libel claim about Texas. Harry Berogan of Mission South Dakota wins the national award for a farmer tale.
Governor Price Daniel urged all Texans to pay poll taxes by January 31 to vote in a year he called decisive. He warned of a DOT minority faction led by Mrs. Randolph aiming to seize control of the Democratic Party and Texas policy, with primaries in July and August and nine constitutional amendments in November.

President Eisenhower, back from a mild stroke, defends his 74 billion dollar budget. He favors deficit spending over tax increases to stimulate the economy, predicting a deficit for the current year but a surplus next year if business improves. Congress may push for higher military spending despite the President’s stance.

Texas Agriculture Commissioner John White told Texas Certified Seed Producers that 1958 could see unsrupulous profiteering as seed shortages push prices up to 50 to 100 percent above normal. He warned poor weather last fall lowered cotton quality and yield and could force re planting if seed shortages worsen.
