Two Whitewright students, Joe Vestal and Donald Neal, were appointed cadet commissioned and non commissioned positions in the East Texas State Teachers College ROTC unit. Major Lindsay said selections were based on ability leadership command military qualities and grades. Upon ROTC completion they will be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U S Air Force Reserve.
Texas cotton farmers must follow 1950 marketing quotas as approved by two thirds of farmers last December. Vance explains quotas allow marketing of all harvests within allotments, with penalties on overplanting. Loans at 90 percent parity and conservation payments available. excess overage faces a half parity penalty.
Federal conciliators reported no progress to avert a threatened strike by 50,000 Southwestern Bell Telephone Co employees. Conciliator A E Johnson met company officials for two hours and said no new offers or proposals were presented by either side.
Life insurance statisticians report about 1 520 000 couples wed in 1949 in the United States a drop of one eighth from 1948 and far below the 2 291 000 marriages in 1946 Insurance experts attribute the fall to fewer unmarried men in the postwar population despite a boom in marriages earlier in the period.

G H Penland former general solicitor of the M K T Railroad becomes general solicitor of the Katy system with Dallas as headquarters. A Hayesville North Carolina native raised in Whitewright he studied at Whitewright schools Grayson College and Baylor University. He joined Katy in 1929 and rises through roles including general solicitor of Texas. He serves Baylor and Hockaday, and is nephew of the late Dr. George Truett. Kay Kimbell of Fort Worth also serves on Katy boards.
Washington reports say President Truman's budget message shows no sign of a full scale hydrogen bomb program. Analysts note the A-bomb cost ran into billions and years, with experts skeptical that the United States is pursuing the hydrogen fusion device.
Resident Engineer Cecil Cagle of the State Highway Department says a new four lane highway between Denison and Sherman will open in about thirty days. He notes drivers already use the barrier fenced road, though traffic on restricted pavement violates state law with no arrest authority for the department. Albert Othen lost his bid to use a lane through Estella Rosier's Dallas County farm to reach his 113 acre property. The court upheld the levee blocking the route, noting limited access via Belt Line Road Duncanville Road and Fish Creek Road. Othen had sued to remove the levee after years of mud and horseback travel.
Houston attorney Virgil E. Arnold announces a prohibitionist bid for Texas governor. He labels himself an old line Democrat and blasts liquor, gambling, and machine politics, pledging to fight until the lower regions freeze over.
Texas reports modest mineral output with forty fine ounces of gold worth 1400 from Shafter area by product of silver mining. Silver production totaled 2000 fine ounces worth 2534 from multiple mines near Van Horn Allamore and Shafter. Copper yields twenty five short tons valued at 9850 while lead dropped to 140 short tons worth 44520.

The Internal Revenue Bureau disclosed it has completed hiring almost 4000 people for a new tax evasion crackdown. Officials did not specify exact numbers but expect the total to be ready by the March 15 1949 individual income tax deadline. About 80 percent will be front line investigators handling returns.
