Optional method for farm income boosts social security protection
Farmers and ranchers may use an optional method to report two thirds of gross income for social security if gross income is at least $600, with a maximum of $1600. This can raise earnings records for retirement survivors disability insurance and Medicare, despite low or negative net farm profits. Gus Jones, social security district manager, urges careful consideration of the tax impact and long term protection.
