The Mysterious Sense of Smell
A historical meditation on smell in medicine notes how doctors once relied on olfaction to diagnose disease. It argues modern civilization dulls the sense, compares physicians to dogs, and cites anecdotes about scent detecting illness or impending death.

Voting Salaries Easy in Congress
President William Henry Harrison died April 4 1841 after one month in office. Congress voted his widow a full year’s salary amid opposition by Senator Benton of Missouri who called it illegal and improper. The practice expanded to pay a full year to the deceased’s nearest kin and to cover funeral expenses, with cases of widows remarrying or taking seats to complete terms. By the present two years, pensions and funerals plus escort committees could exceed $300000, while Congress seeks large budget cuts elsewhere. Notable cases include Alice Roosevelt Longworth and Ernest B Ackerman’s widow. The piece cites inflation of pensions and the tension between fiscal restraint and public sympathy.
