The Navy presents Bonham with a 25 inch replica of the 425 foot USS Sam Rayburn. Navy recruiter H. C. Eckert from Denison gave the model to Mayor John Crockett for city hall display with a later transfer to the Rayburn Library for permanent exhibit.
Congressman Ray Roberts announces his bid for re election in the Fourth District stating a commitment to support President Lyndon B Johnson and his 1964 nomination and election Roberts notes he will issue an official announcement through The Sun at a later date Roberts first won office in 1962 in a special election to succeed the late Speaker Sam Rayburn and is a longtime Democrat and friend of President Johnson
The Little Rock Home Demonstration Club met at Mrs. L. L. Wendell’s home for its last 1963 gathering. President Jim Grider led a brief business session, tests on parliamentary procedure were given, and a program on personality health followed.
Winners in the Christmas lighting contest sponsored by the Friday Literary Club include Tom Sears first with $10.00, Bob Dunlap second with $7.50, Wallace Wilson third with $5.00, J. B. Thornhill fourth with $5.00, and honorable mention Philip Earnheart. The $5.00 business house prize went to T. W. Ayres & Son. Prizes were donated by Community Public Service Company, the Rotary Club, Chamber of Commerce, and the Friday Literary Club.
Clarence Rino, president of the Savoy Industrial Foundation, says the push for new industry is tied to a water system upgrade. Bids open Jan 6 for a 100000 gallon elevated tank, 50 gallon per minute well, and new mains. The foundation will host fundraisers aiming to raise 50000 to attract industry and has optioned 60 acres inside Savoy.
Funeral services were held December 25 at the Methodist church in O'Donnell for Jones R Pierce 69 who died December 23 after a two year illness. He was a 34 year resident of O'Donnell and member of the Methodist church. Survivors include his wife four daughters Mrs Frankie Cook Mrs T A Barrington Mrs Rosco Rogers Mrs Jerry Harper and four sons Jones R Jr Robert Lee Charles Irving and Billy George a brother Ronald a sister duo Mrs Gertrude Williams and Mrs Johnnie King ten grandchildren and one great grandson.
James L. Able father of Mrs. Otto Cunningham of Whitewright died last Thursday and was buried Saturday at Van Alstyne. Survivors include his wife, one son Ernest Able of Van Alstyne, four daughters, twelve grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
A reader noted a pattern in U.S. history where presidents elected in zero years died in office at 20 year intervals, listing Harrison Lincoln Garfield McKinley Harding Roosevelt Kennedy.
