W. W. Gunn of the Grayson County AAA office will visit Whitewright next Wednesday and Thursday to outline the cotton insurance program. Farmers must apply by March 15 and pay premiums in cotton at ginning or have them deducted from government payments.

House Ways and Means Chair Doughton announced hearings on new tax proposals start Tuesday March 3 with Secretary Morgenthau the first witness. Morgenthau said Treasury and congressional experts are near agreement on tax policy ahead of the hearings and emphasized a goal to raise seven billion dollars annually while remaining opposed to sales tax proposals.
Washington reports the selective service headquarters announced a new wartime draft lottery for March 17. Numbers 1 through about 9,000,000 potential registrants will be placed in green capsules and drawn by blindfolded officials using a goldfish bowl. The process follows the pattern of prior drawings under the Selective Service Law.
G. P. Prentice Gafford of Sherman announces his candidacy for Grayson County sheriff in the Democratic primary. He has served as a deputy under Sheriff P. M. Porter for over three years and was district clerk for four years. He plans to contact voters during the campaign.
President Roosevelt said aircraft reinforcements could not be delivered to Gen. Douglas Mac Arthur s forces on the Bataan Peninsula. He dismissed ideas of landing a bomber or Navy aircraft by water as impractical and questioned practicality at a press conference.

Selective Service announces that men inducted into the army will be taken the same day as their physical examination. Previously induction followed about ten days after exams at reception centers. Eligible registrants will be notified to report for induction while those unfit remain eligible for appeal and personal appearance before local boards.
J Benton Davis of Dorchester announces his candidacy for sheriff of Grayson County, subject to the Democratic primary July 25. Davis served three terms as sheriff and says wartime needs demand efficient peace officers, urging voters to weigh qualifications before voting.
Grammar School votes on Saturday classes with 193 for and 33 against from an enrollment of 256. Seventh grade unanimous for, fourth grade mostly for. teachers largely oppose but back community good. Lunchroom staff oppose due to shorter workday. A new D. Y. B. Club forms in fifth grade with officers Marion Myrick, James Camp, Jane Meador.
In a Texas and federal program, about 10,000 needy children are on rolls with 17,772 more in 7,540 families awaiting aid. Benefits target dependents due to death illness or parental absence, with payments managed by the State Department of Public Welfare.
Texas stands with abundant oil and gasoline and opposes nationwide rationing to avoid harming business and daily life. Senator H L Winfield of Fort Stockton argues federal supplies suffice for war and Texas can ship fuel east using idle tank cars.

He declares the day is near when Americans will not be outnumbered and portrays the American fighting man as strong and angry. He criticizes complacency as the preserve of a shrinking minority and ends with a quip illustrating "oratory" through a tale about a Negro speaker.
