Rev. Weldon R. Drake will deliver his final sermons at First Baptist on Sunday morning and evening before moving to a new pastorate. He speaks on The Challenge Before Us Today in the morning and If I Had Only One Sermon to Preach in the evening. Dr. R. L. Smith of Fort Worth will supply from March 5 until a new pastor arrives.
The Texas special session ends with a broad set of tax increases starting March 1. Cigarettes rise a penny a pack and numerous hidden levies affect liquor, wine, beer, radios, cosmetics, playing cards, and auto sales. Corporations face higher franchise taxes, utilities pay more, and oil and gas related taxes add millions, with the motor carriers seeing the smallest rise.
The 1949 liquor report shows wets and drys nearly tied in Texas with wets ahead by a shade. Total dry counties 140 and wholly wet 35, Palo Pinto County now allowing beer sales. Distilled spirits legal in 92 counties. map shows wet area mainly south of a Winkler to Orange line with pockets in Dalham Moore Potter Carson Gray Wichita Tarrant Dallas Gregg Bowie Stephens Palo Pinto.
R H McLean 43 owner of Hi Land Lodge on Lake Texoma was ambushed and killed on a gravel road near Pottsboro. William Morris Jones 26 was charged with murder and arrested after a log barricade incident. Eyewitness E H Perrin said Jones shot McLean with a .22 rifle as Perrin’s party watched.
The Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and Order of Railway Conductors fixed February 27 for a nationwide strike. The strike would be delayed at least two months under the Railway Labor Act, affecting about 250,000 railroad workers. The deadlock involved demands for a 40 hour week without pay cuts for 85,000 yard men and improvements for road workers and dining car stewards.
In Washington, a federal judge dismissed Texas cotton acreage protests seeking equalization of 1950 allotments. Judge Matthew F. McGuire ruled the Agriculture Department followed the law in statewide and county allocations. Only congressional action remains, with the House having passed a relief measure boosting Texas by 508 398 acres.
Amedeo Ricchetto 53 a coal miner from Alverda died last Tuesday. His will filed for probate provides $100 to buy Bevanda for all attendees at his funeral in Johnstown Pennsylvania.

City of Whitewright Texas schedules an April 4 1950 election for mayor and appoints election managers R C Vestal judge C C Dillon clerk and Mrs O L Jones clerk. City Marshal to post notice thirty days prior at City Hall as required by law.

Rep. Lovre of South Dakota unveils a farm program to guarantee full parity prices for domestically consumed crops while taxing surpluses with marketing quotas. The plan would cost the government less than current policy and Brannan proposals, funding surplus relief through quota fees and transfers to needy programs. Surplus producers would face reduced returns, discouraging overproduction and shifting excess to be used domestically or abroad at subsidized prices.
Seymour J. Phillips of Phillips Jones Corp told the National Association of Retail Clothiers and Furnishers in Chicago that spring prices will stay attractive but textile costs and higher wages are likely to push men shirts pajama sets and sport shirts higher by the next fall.
New York homeowners gain a window that closes automatically when rain begins. Four horizontal glass panels swing out from a pulling lever like venetian blinds, and when eight ounces of rain collect on the top panel it shuts under the water’s weight. A wind of six miles an hour or more also seals the house.
At a Board of Education meeting in Whitewright the district appointed Mrs. B. W. Newman as tax assessor and collector. She will begin March 1, debit school taxes under county assessment, and also take the March school census. The board urged parents with children turning six by Sept 1, 1950 to notify Mr. Newman.
The First Presbyterian Church will open its doors Friday from 1 to 3 PM for meditation and prayer in observance of World Day of Prayer inviting all who wish to join.
Wichita Falls Record News reports Case March he has information that W Lee O Daniel will formally announce as a candidate for Governor about June 1. O Daniel, a former Texas governor and U S senator, has backing and is on a West Texas swing. March cited sources in Fort Worth as the wealthier backer who might fund O Daniel.

Tuesday serves black-eyed peas golden hominy slaw rolls butter honey milk and fruit juice. Wednesday offers cheese spaghetti with tomatoes buttered English peas lettuce and pineapple salad hot bread. Thursday presents Coney Islands with chili sauce cabbage and apple salad peanut butter cookies. Friday serves baked fish with lemon potato salad on lettuce leaf and green beans.
The Texas Confederate veteran rolls show only five Army of the South members on the January 31 pension list. Four have died since January 1, 1949, leaving five survivors all over 100, with the oldest at 104. One veteran is at the State Home in Austin, others receive modest state pensions and living support. There are 798 widows on the rolls, 31 in the Austin Woman's Home, ages ranging 73 to 105, with 149 widows having died since 1949.
