A reader from Wichita requests renewal of a family subscription and notes Sun stories on Whitewright’s past and the school news. Also announced are the Whitewright School Board meeting set for Thursday night and a 7th grade basketball tournament from February 20 to 22 with girls vs Farmersville Thursday at 1 PM and boys at 2 PM.
The report covers two items: pastor Maurice Neathery remains in serious condition after a February 10 claw hammer assault at Saner Avenue Church of Christ in Dallas with unknown intruder, stolen money, and a discarded coat from a charity box. Also notes March 5 as the last day to file for a three year school board term and a two year unexpired term, with candidate rules and drawing for ballot order on March 7.
Councilman Bill Pearce represented Whitewright at the county bicentennial flag and certificate presentation in Sherman. Fourteen county city reps attended with Judge R. C. Vaughan presiding. Denison Stage Band and Sherman High School Band performed. VFW Post 2772 Denison presented colors. Rev. Robert Hultz offered the benediction.
Leroy DuQuette returns as Whitewright police chief after 22 years in law enforcement including Navy service and stints as Leonard City Marshall. He will lead a near full-time force with uniforms provided and a monthly 12.50 cleaning allowance. Joe Orr joins as relief patrolman and Buck Kidd as nightwatchman.
Special guests at the Rotary Ann Banquet held last Tuesday at the Silver Wings Club on Grayson County College campus included Joe Tate Bonham Past District Governor Bill Snodgrass Bonham club president Herman Stoner Sherman club president Frank Silverwise Denison club president and Dr Truman Wester Grayson County College president. President Bill McFatridge gave the welcome to the Rotary Ams and Mrs Chuck Wilson delivered the response. Chuck Wilson will be installed as Rotary president in July. Rotarian Clint Hennig introduced the Whitewright Beta Club trio Julie Johnson Brenda Thornhill and Betty Kay Geers who honored District Governor elect Emory Christian with a ren dition of It Had to be You. They closed with patriotic songs. Mrs C J Meador Mrs Glen Barnehart and Mrs Clay Horton widows of three former locals.
Joe Norwood, formerly of Fairfield, will replace James Ashley as Division Construction Coordinator for Continental Telephone in the Southwest Division at Dallas office. Ashley, district facility manager in the local Continental office for 22 years, will move to Plano with his wife and sons. Norwood, already in the local office, is succeeded by his wife Veda and children. Rotarians were recognized with prayers, flowers, and door prizes at the meeting. Separate notice reminds SSI beneficiaries to report events affecting entitlement, listing changes in address living arrangements family size income or resources and medical condition improvements as reportable.
The Whitewright City Council approved a study of a proposed rate increase for Lone Star Gas to about 1.27 per thousand cubic feet, with city counsel to review and respond by the March meeting. Officials also discussed delinquent taxes, flag ceremony plans, street repairs, and mayoral succession with Mayor Freeman resigning effective April 5.
Elmer Reynolds, long time construction foreman and service lead for Grayson Collin Electric Co op, retires December 31 1974 after thirty years with the rural system. He and wife Elizabeth live near Bells and he remains active in An tioch Baptist Church and local Masonry.
Joe Griffis runs a busy barber shop in Whitewright eight years after opening. Men now visit less often, with styles from flat tops to mohawks evolving as customers seek a styled look. The shop also features a trading post selling odds and ends and used bicycles, which Griffis repairs and resells, attracting many young riders.
Joe, a farm boy turned barber in Whitewright, runs a busy shop with his wife Jamice. His son Mickey and son Jerry age 13 help, while Joe dyes shoes, welds, and even shaves beards in homes, rest homes, and funeral homes. A famed moment came when Rev. Rymer’s mustache fell to a $2 shave, amid a life filled with local quirks and family.
Mrs Gwen Bush of Whitewright earned Dean's List status with a high A average in the Licensed Vocational Nurse program for both semesters. Mrs Geneva Murphy made all A's with one B on the honor roll in the one year program, to be completed in August.
