Mechanical cotton pickers worth the cost in 1948 Texas tests
Texas Agricultural Experiment Station reports from 1948 field trials show mechanical strippers yielded higher profits per bale on dry land and near parity on irrigated runs despite higher losses. The study notes cost savings from harvesting and labor scarcity push many farmers toward machine stripping in the High Plains region.

Weather, genius, and births in historical note
Dr. Huntington links birth months with mental traits and says spring temperatures boost genius and achievement. He notes mental activity peaks when temperatures fall below 47 F in spring and fall. He also cites fall pregnancy survival and a hummingbird as a unique flight fact, plus six generals becoming U.S. presidents. George Washington, unlike these others, never held the presidency.

Bombproof White House Shelter Built After Pearl Harbor
Deep underground near the White House lies a bombproof air raid shelter built after Pearl Harbor. It withstood build rush in 1942 and later served as a paint shop during the Cold War. The 40 by 40 foot facility, designed for 100 people, can endure a direct 1000 pound bomb and an atomic blast according to experts, with four chambers including a main room, sanitary facilities and a first aid area.
