All telephone numbers in the Whitewright exchange will change on Sunday February 5 to Forest 4. Subscribers dial seven digits instead of five. The old last four digits stay the same to avoid confusion. The change enables future long distance dialing and automation, with no expected mechanical issues or bugs for users.
Funeral services for Mrs. J A Pumphrey, 80, were held at Barnheart chapel with Rev J E Montgomery and Rev Ray Bristol presiding. Burial followed at Oak Hill Cemetery. Survivors include husband J A Pumphrey two daughters Mrs Tom Norris and Miss Mardell Pumphrey two sons Royce Lay and Ray Goren ten grandchildren and six brothers.
Hefner Manufacturing Company moved its equipment to McKinney this week after suspending operations in the prior week. Local creditors met Friday with Mr. and Mrs. Preston Hefner, learning the plant lost about 8000 dollars in a year and arranging with the Internal Revenue Department to pay off a tax lien by monthly installments. He cited a shortage of skilled operators, noting only 14 or 15 workers in recent months.
Cars and trucks in Whitewright can buy their 1956 license plates at the city office. Harold Doss acts as deputy for Iva Davidson for plate sales. Plate numbers range JN 5275 to 5974 and old registration papers are required. New car first registrations go through Sherman county tax office. Registration runs February 1 to March 31. plates must be displayed by April 1. Plates are yellow numerals on black with side by side letters.
Burglars broke into the Cole and Davis Company dry goods store Saturday night, taking about ten dollars from the cash register after forcing the back door. A second pair of felt house shoes and scattered coins were found, with the theft linked to a local pattern of money-focused burglaries in recent months.
John L. Biggerstaff was elected president of the Whitewright Chamber of Commerce succeeding James H. Gosnell. Carl Edwards was named vice president Edwin Badgett continued as secretary and treasurer for two months. New directors include J. P. Darwin Elbert Bennett Glenn Doss with Holdovers George M. Hight Bob Andrew M. B. Hasty.

GOP candidates for governor in 1954 totaled 69,000 votes.
Central Airlines began a new line Tuesday linking Sherman and Denison with Dallas and Fort Worth with stops at Fayetteville and Fort Smith Arkansas McAlester Oklahoma and Paris Sherman and Denison Texas A group of 22 area officials and civic leaders arrived Monday and were greet ed by Mayor Raymond R Tucker.
Belle the hunting dog becomes a mother of four pups and enlists a Rhode Island Red hen to watch the litter while she hunts. The hen spreads her wings over the pups providing warmth and care, a curious arrangement appreciated by the pups.
