Former Citizen Denton Dies at 59 in Sherman

C J Denton former superintendent of Whitewright and later Central High School principal in Sherman died at his home 1417 North Harrison avenue Saturday night. He was 59 born in Bowling Green Kentucky and had been ill with paralysis. Funeral services were held at Central Christian Church and burial followed in Whitewright. Pallbearers included J C Pyle J R Moody Perry Waldrop and others. He is survived by his wife two daughters three sons and two brothers.

Girl Awakening Finds All of Family Dead

A gas leak from a defective connection killed Christopher Hines his wife and two sons as they exchanged gifts around a Christmas tree in Philadelphia. A 16 year old daughter survived. A church messenger found the family Sunday morning and Bertha the daughter alerted neighbors after fainting.

Sam McMillin Injured In Auto Accident

Sam McMillin suffered painful injuries Saturday in Greenville when the car he rode in was struck by a Cotton Belt train. His brother in law J Q Adams escaped with minor cuts and bruises, another passenger lost part of a finger, and McMillin was thrown through the windshield. He was taken to a hospital then home. expected to stay in his room several days.

Barn Destroyed By Fire On Cameron Farm

A large barn with feed inside burned Saturday night at about 8 30 on the Joe Cameron farm southwest of town. It belonged to Joe B. Cameron and Mrs Charley Biggerstaff. The owners had insurance until the policy expired Wednesday. A new policy was not written and the barn was left uninsured.

Farm Home Destroyed by Fire on Tuesday

A three room dwelling on Roscoe Vestal’s farm southeast of town occupied by Mrs Nellie Brown burned Tuesday morning around 4 o clock. The house contents were nearly a total loss with only a few small articles saved. Mrs Brown had no insurance while Vestal’s loss was insured. The cause remains undetermined.

Bob Sears, local Chevrolet dealer, has received a shipment of the new Chevrolet cars. They will be placed on display Saturday at the S. & S. Service Station. The cars are said to be a great improvement over the present model.

First Baptist Pastor to Return for New Year Service

Rev. J. H. Hawkins, pastor of the First Baptist Church, writes from Pine Bluff Arkansas that he will be home Friday. A special New Year’s service with music is planned for Sunday morning at the Baptist Church.

Tyson Receives 15000 Gift From Waco Cleveland Grid Game

The article reports Coach Paul Tyson receiving about 15000 as a testimonial payout from a game between Waco and Cleveland. Sherman warns jan 1 deadline for auto license fees

The notice explains that city taxes are due by Saturday and state county levies by Jan 31 1928. It stresses motor vehicle licenses must be paid by Jan 1 and that no extension is allowed even if Jan 1 falls on Sunday. Vehicles without 1928 licenses are in violation and subject to penalties.

Baxter couple mark fiftieth wedding anniversary

Mr and Mrs W A Baxter six miles southwest of town celebrate their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Married December 25 1877 in Shellyville Tennessee they moved to Texas in 1905 and have lived near Whitewright. Nine children born, eight living, with eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild present.

Sherman officials said W C Le Baron president of the Grayson County Live Stock Association announced the annual banquet will be held in Sherman January 13. The event marks the tenth anniversary of the organization with over 100 members and a campaign to boost membership starting at the banquet.

Grand avenue Garage and Filling Station to Rise in Grayson County

W C Huffines and Mrs Gilliam Lindsey have hired L La Roe & Company to build a modern concrete and stucco garage with filling station on Grand Avenue and Bond Street. The 75 by 142 foot structure, costing over 8000 dollars, will replace the Woosley building destroyed by fire. It will house Huffines and Bob Sears with a rear garage, feature extensive glass on two sides, and include a lighted show space and parking under a roofed alcove.
