Christmas Season One of Pleasure In Whitewright
Whitewright residents enjoyed a sequence of Christmas events from December 17 to 24. Church groups hosted gift exchanges for underprivileged children, and the cantata Chimes of the Holy Night directed by Mrs. Guy Hamilton drew 24 choir voices. Sunday schools held Christmas trees with gift distributions, many businesses closed for Christmas Day, and despite typical weather, the season passed without incident.

Price of Gasoline Due to Drop Soon
The federal gasoline tax will be reduced by one third effective January 1, cutting the long standing tax from 1 1/2 cents to 1 cent per gallon. Baby is born in car stalled in New York snowdrift
An eight pound baby boy arrived Tuesday in an automobile stalled in a snowdrift in New Rochelle New York. The father a rug merchant tried rushing his wife to a hospital but the car bogged down before the entrance. He sought help as doctors arrived to deliver the child. The mother’s name was not released.

Springfield Ill Illinois Wednesday abolished real estate and personal property taxes for state assessments, the first full substitution of a sales tax for property taxes in the United States. A 2 percent retail sales tax, possibly aided by liquor taxes, would replace about 35 million dollars of annual state levies. Local units will still tax real estate and personal property, but the state tax cut should save property owners 7 to 19 percent.
