Sherman Plans License Tax Ordinance For Itinerant Merchants
An ordinance excludes itinerant merchants from Sherman unless they post a license tax for two years while permanency is tested. It fixes penalties from five to two hundred dollars daily and requires payment of tax as gross inventory times the city rate or an eligible bond in lieu of deposit.
Itinerant merchants blamed as menace to town
The text notes that itinerant merchants in Whitewright have long been a problem, with two recent cases leaving townspeople with unpaid taxes. One left after a few days with shoes, another after about three months with dry goods. They gathered what money they could and departed, contributing nothing to city government or schools. The writer calls for suppression of the travel merchants.
