Five decades past the first rail arrival at Whitewright marks a town in growth. Articles praise civic effort, marketing of melons, improved crossings, and weed control. Dairy development gains momentum with institutes and a Sherman bank meeting forming a financing group for local dairy expansion.
In Grayson County Whitewright increased its vote total in the run off on Saturday to 361 from July’s 345. Tom Connelly carried Whitewright by 53 votes over Earle Mayfield with other state and county races led by Marrs Robison Noble Tennison Hogan and McMillin holding notable margins in the precinct results.
Allie S. Noble declares victory in the county judge race and thanks supporters. He pledges to discharge the office with absolute impartiality and a friendly attitude toward all as the election stress ends.
Budget Director H. M. Lord told President Coolidge that even as frugal measures saved millions, total federal outlay rose to 3.6435 billion dollars in 1928 with a 149.9 million increase from the prior year. He projected 1929 expenditures above 3.8 billion and 1930 aims to cap spending near 3.7 billion excluding postals.
Roy Duffy son of Mrs J R Fleming of this city will play on radio station KVOO Tulsa Oklahoma from 7 to 730 p m Friday dedicating the program to Miss Laura Jean Fleming of Whitewright. Duffy is known to Whitewright residents and often presents programs over KVOO.
About fourteen local Boy Scouts joined Denison scouts for an overnight trip to Devil's Den Oklahoma. The group traveled by Claud Stephens' truck, camped by the Pennington River, swam, cooked, and explored caves and rocks. No serious injuries occurred though bruises and scrapes were common. the trip was deemed a success. Guy Yowell thanks organizers.
Democratic Executive Committee members who refuse to pledge support for the entire ticket in November will be asked to resign at a Montgomery meeting tomorrow. A D Maddox of Bessemer announced the move, saying balters should resign or be removed.
Army monthly enlistments in Great Britain have nearly tripled with a majority of new recruits reportedly married men. The surge reflects a shift in manpower as conscription and recruitment efforts intensify.
Allie S. Noble wins county judge in a razor thin runoff over Ed Westbrook by one vote. Noble 4 384 to 4 385, with 29 boxes to 30 for Westbrook, the closest county race in Grayson County history. County clerk race sees Jim Doggett defeat Tom Tennison. tax assessor Bob May leads over Bud Hogan with totals noted.
The Church of Christ holds Bible School at 10 o clock Sunday morning with all members urged to attend on time and bring a guest. Preaching by minister J R Waldrum at 11 o clock morning and 8 o clock evening. Visitors invited to attend any or all services.
White Wright received forty bales of cotton by Tuesday and Wednesday with J. H. Hopper selling two bales. Eighteen bales were received on Wednesday as ginners expect a rush next week. The market stayed steady with lint prices from 18.57 to 19 cents per pound and seed sold at 6.60 per hundred. cotton seed at 30.00 a ton.
Over half a million votes were tabulated through Wednesday from 251 counties in the state. The report lists candidate tallies including Senator Connally 10 801 Mayfield 250 882 Garnner 230 416 Marrs 308 148 Robison 335 927 Terrell 190 391.
A dedication service took place at Desert Presbyterian Church eight miles south of town. Rev. C. C. Hines of Leonard led, with Rev. R. E. Robinson of Dallas delivering the sermon and Rev. J. F. Fender offering prayer. J. W. Gordon oversaw the music. The church, organized in 1883, had two charter members present, R. B. Gordon and Mrs. Martha Brooks, and a lawn dinner followed by pioneer talks.
Tom Brice secured the Democratic nomination for cotton weigher in the precinct. His majority was about 185 with strong margins in Tom Bean and Pilot Grove, and a close race in Whitewright Bells Kentuckytown and Ida boxes.
The Eyesight Conservation Council of America reports only 3.4 percent of 1,860 school children aged six to sixteen tested in Washington have perfect eyesight. 34 percent need glasses and 1 percent more are recommended for reading. Far sightedness affects 63 percent, while near sightedness rises notably from ages seven to twelve.
State Highway Commission will let about 4 000 000 dollars of highway construction at its September 17 and 18 session. Projects cover 329 miles across Austin Webb Kinney Foard Fort Bend Hudspeth Matagorda La Salle Refugio Victoria Wilbarger Knox Cottle Harris Cass Jim Wells Henderson Walker Fayette Shackelford El Paso and Zavalla counties. Concrete work totals 69 miles with 49 miles of bituminous on concrete or crushed rock.
Sherman – Senator Ed Westbrook, defeated by one vote in the run off for county judge, said he has nothing to say about a possible contest. A decision will come after canvassing of returns by the Democratic county executive committee on Saturday and the official result is announced.
Whitewright Public Schools set opening for Sept 10 with seven new faculty members. New hires include S F Semosek from Denton with science lab experience, Margaret Forrester from Dallas in registrar work, and Denton native Margaret Lauderdale. Local hires include Wilburn from Bells, Margaret McMurry, Gladys Ray, and H B Crosby who will head football. Christine Taylor left for a higher paying post, and Crosby scouts local football talent while housing remains a concern.
