Whitewright to build 4 million city hall and civic center

Hayter Engineering shows an artist’s conception of Whitewright’s new 4 million city hall and civic center complex. The plan includes a three stall fire station, library, municipal offices, police department, and a community meeting room with kitchen. A $494000 grant from the Economic Development Administration funds the project.

Rotary Exchange Objective Success at Whitewright Rotary

McFatridge, a North Texas student returning from a Rotary Student Exchange trip to Japan, told Whitewright Rotarians the program promotes international understanding. He recalled visiting Japan and meeting 16 year old Eriko Shoji from Shirasha, guest in the McFatridge home, part of a group of 21 Japanese youths visiting the region. Masanobu Yusa, sponsor of the visiting group, spoke on the program.

Driving course set at ETSU for residents

A defensive driving course sponsored by Commerce A will be held at East Texas State University next Tuesday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for area residents. Eight-hour program costs 12 dollars and offers eligibility for a rate decrease on auto insurance and possible fines alternative for certain violators. Glenn Wagner, ETSU traffic safety coordinator, teaches in the Sam Rayburn Memorial Student Center resort hotel.

Back on the job in White despite town’s warm welcomes

Velma Higgins Dies, Whitewright Native Obituary

Velma Higgins a 75 year old Whitewright native and former Bonham resident died August 18 1977 in a Bonham hospital after a lingering illness. Services were held Saturday at Wise Funeral Chapel Bonham with Rev Steerr officiating. Buried Oak Hill Cemetery Whitewright. She was born Velma Mae Kirkpatrick daughter of the late Rev and Mrs W A Kirkpatrick and taught homemaking in Prairie Hill Mexia before co owning Grant Vogue store in Bonham and later continuing it after her first husband Robert Grant died in 1962. She later married Dick Higgins in 1968 and died November 11 1974. Surviving are sisters Vera Hickman Dallas Nora Dillon and brother Ira L Kirkpatrick. Pallbearers named.
