Rainfall of 2.75 inches Tuesday, the first in August, soaked the Whitewright area, giving ground a thorough wetting since June 22. July rainfall was light, June total reached 4.79 inches, and farmers split on cotton needs. The rain is seen as beneficial to cotton, late corn, and pastures if it does not continue.
Grayson County commissioners will act quickly on plans to erect a county farm home with about 38 000 available. Judge J N Dickson said funds come from 17 725 in land sales 6 000 oil leases and 15 000 insurance on a fire damaged farm home building. The panel also approved tax reallocation to precinct road funds and purchases of a crawler tractor and shelving units.
In Philadelphia a Stockton 2 year old, Nancy Lee Pollock, died after waking from fear of storms described by her mother as mortally afraid of thunderstorms. A detective said the thunder she heard was likely the sound of drums from a nearby drum corps rehearsing. A physician pronounced her dead after she became rigid and then fell limp.
Zone 2 Grayson County Baptist youth met at First Baptist Church for their monthly gathering. East Sherman Baptist Church led the program with Rev. Jimmy Frankling of Howard Payne College as speaker. Attendees earned a banner. postprogram activities included games, films, and refreshments. The next county-wide meeting is set for September 16 at Sherman First Baptist Church.
San Antonio journalist Wilbur Keith will keynote the Grayson College ex-students ninth annual meeting on August 24 at the High School building. The program includes songs, invocations, a welcome, reports, and musical interludes, with afternoon events featuring a quiz and a speech by W. P. Z. German of Tulsa and remarks by Judge S. F. Leslie.
Mrs. Dave E. McCullough, 79, of Pink Hill west of Bells, died Saturday when her farm home burned. Her husband, 86, sustained minor burns. Fire likely from a kerosene stove explosion. Norris moved stock and equipment earlier this week.
Texas' World War II veterans must file by July 26 1949 for readjustment allowances under the servicemen's act. Post July 25 1947 discharges have two years to claim benefits. those enlisted or reenlisted between Oct 6 1945 and Oct 5 1946 follow the end of their enlistment period. TEC notes most veterans are employed and covered by both acts, with claims filed through TEC offices.

A bolt of lightning sparked a fire that destroyed the $25,000 Wentzel farm home east of Sherman before dawn Monday. About 20 percent of the value was insured. Mrs. Annie Wentzel and her daughter Mrs. Rauel Straus with Straus' son woke at 3 am to a thunderclap, then found the house aflame an hour later.
Bethel Baptist Church will hold a vacation Bible school starting Monday at 8 p m under the direction of Pastor Rev John R Stephens. The public is invited to attend. A revival planned for last Sunday was postponed due to illness of Rev Claud Johnston.
The Ely community farm workshop was dedicated at noon Tuesday with Congressman Sam Rayburn delivering the principal address. He praised Ely citizens for cooperation in building the workshop and urged soil conservation, noting GI courses in agriculture and the GI vocational school. The event included brief remarks by Ely Agricultural Association leaders, welcomed by Dave Beazley, and a large barbecue. The 30 by 50 foot building houses machinery and tools and serves 22 veterans enrolled in the vocational class.
Kansas City report says 3 000 to 5 000 acres of Missouri farmland received rain Tuesday night from a Spencer Chemical Company planed operation. Kenneth Spencer claimed 100 pounds of dry ice released at 10 000 feet produced showers starting at 7 000 feet with ground temperature 105. Observers including farmers reported rain varied from light showers to soaking rain along a 25 mile stretch.
In San Francisco Gabriel Gabrello a 50 year old Filipino bicycle messenger died and left behind a strange estate of forty fat alley cats most in cages and fifteen kittens found in his 5 by 9 foot room. Public Administrator Phil Katz said Gabrello was nearly penniless and kept the cats secret until his death. The animals were turned over to the city pound.
Preston Everheart Post No 225 of the American Legion sponsors an amateur rodeo at the American Legion park tonight and Friday night with a parade downtown at 7. The rodeo begins at 8 and proceeds benefit the American Legion building fund after the arena's recent completion.
Albert Nibling editor of The Sherman Democrat will speak at the Current Book Club meeting next Monday at 8 p.m. Discussing McCarthy Maverick Town and noting the writing of J Evatts Haley and J Frank Dobie he will offer new viewpoints. The event will be in the Presbyterian Church parlors and is open to members.
