Tax Equalization Election Saturday in Whitewright area

Voters in the Whitewright Independent School District will vote Saturday August 10 on bonding Desert School District indebtedness and on tax equalization between the two districts. Polls open 8:00 a m to 7:00 p m at the city election room. Supt S T Montgomery Jr urged a representative turnout.

Rotary Governor To Visit Whitewright Club August 9

President gets bill for dam at San Angelo

The Senate passed a bill authorizing a 32 million dollar dam and reservoir at San Angelo Texas. About 11 million would be repaid by operators of 10 000 irrigated acres and domestic water users would repay about 7 million. Congress must appropriate funds to start construction. Texas irrigation totals exceed 4 706 017 acres.

Grayson County officials seek public input on closing the county courthouse all day Saturdays with only the Sheriff's Office handling business. The plan cites Saturday holidays for workers and years of noon closures. If no strong objections arise, the schedule starts August 17.

McElroy Named Defense Secretary

L. M. West Named Bells School Superintendent

L M West of the Tom Bean school faculty is elected superintendent of the Bells schools succeeding Stacy Newman. Newman resigns after six years and becomes junior high principal at Jefferson. Mrs Newman will teach at the Jefferson grade school. West previously headed Bells High School before moving to Tom Bean.

Food Prices Rise Again in Wholesale Index

New York reports the Dun & Bradstreet wholesale food price index reaching 6.39, a 26 month high and 4.8 percent above last year. The six week run of increases shows higher prices for wheat corn rye oats hams butter milk cocoa potatoes steers and hogs while flour lard sugar coffee cottonseed oil eggs and lambs decline.

Meat dealers urged to use newspapers for ads

The National Association of Retail Meat and Food Dealers urged retailers to use newspaper advertising as the bargain media to build business on solid foundations. They said newspaper ads will return many times the original investment. Printing in Whitewright was noted in the copy.

Death of Floyd Clyde Long at 61 in Whitewright studio

Floyd Clyde Long, 61, was found dead in his Whitewright photographic studio last Thursday. He suffered a heart attack likely occurring Wednesday night or Thursday morning after chest pains. Born September 7, 1895 in Gainesville, he married Goldie Laningham in 1921. she died in 1940. Survivors include a son Charles A. Long and siblings Walter, Charles I., Charlotte, Evelyn, and G. G. McClaran. Funeral in Gainesville and burial at Fairview Cemetery.

Mrs. Roy McDaniel Dies at 66 in Denison

Mrs. Roy McDaniel 66 died in a Denison hospital. Funeral services were held in Denison and burial in Fairview Cemetery. Born near Whitewright October 21, 1890 she was the daughter of John M. and Georgia Collins. She married Roy McDaniel June 8, 1920 and lived in Denison 28 years. Survivors include her husband two daughters two brothers a sister and three grandchildren.

Ned Ayres To Open Downtown Cafe In Remodeled Building

Ned Ayres will move his cafe from Highway 69 to the old Pierce cafe building downtown. Lee Wilson owns the remodeled site and plans a private dining room and kitchen after lowering the ceiling. The dining area will match Craig cafe space and serve Rotary Club and other groups, with operation expected within a week of August 26.

FHA Cuts Down Payment and Hikes FHA Loan Rates

The government halves the minimum down payment for FHA insured homes and raises FHA loan interest to 5 1/2 percent.
