Whitewright dominated the Grayson County 4-H Dress Revue held in Sherman with eight winners across senior advanced junior and junior divisions. Notables include Anna Franklin first in junior and Donna Kay Franklin blue in senior, plus Alpha McLauchlin Gail McCasland blue ribbons and Donna Shaw Peggy Bennett red ribbons in junior. County Judge Jim Dickson awarded ribbons before about 350 spectators. Evelyn Oldham narrated with aide Zelma Moore and Martha Howell.
Charles Herman infant son of Mr and Mrs Ross Lewis died a few hours after birth on July 31 in a hospital in DeKalb Mississippi Lewis formerly of Whitewright is stationed with the army in California Survivors include the infant's paternal grandparents Mr and Mrs C H Lewis Route 1 Whitewright and the maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Otis Barnett of DeKalb
William Hugh Lee Barker 58 retired farmer died at his sister Mrs. John W. Simpson home in Ector at 4 45 p m Friday August 1 after a stroke. Funeral 4 p m Sunday First Baptist Church Ector burial Carson Cemetery. Survived by brothers O W Barker Whitewright Clarence Barker Sherman. sisters Mrs Jess Nichols Dodd City Mrs Bedford Anderson Mrs Norman Moore and Mrs John D Simpson all of Ector and several nieces and nephews. A brother Ollie Barker died at Alvin two weeks earlier. Born July 4 1900 in Delta County son of the late Mr and Mrs H E Barker he had lived in Ector since his parents death.
Funeral services were held Tuesday in Whittier California for Dan Freeman Vincent 36 of Duarte California who died Friday after months of illness Burial was in Whittier He was born January 29 1922 in Ida Grayson County to the late Tom and Mary Vincent He is survived by his wife four daughters seven brothers and four sisters with relatives listed in Whitewright Van Alstyne Grand Prairie Covina and Dorchester.
The Veterans Land Board announced the next forfeited land sale for October 8 on 160 tracts. Purchasers must pay the old taxes due to a Supreme Court ruling that taxes stay with the land. The board also forfeited 13 tracts totaling 1,020 acres across 12 counties.
In Brantford Ontario a merchant advertised pants at three dollars a leg or six dollars a pair. Two customers ordered their pants and manager Jack Brown retrieved scissors. Two one legged men departed with half a pair each, paying three dollars per leg.
Mr and Mrs J E Worsham of Whitewright celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Aug 4 60th. They are long time residents of Leonard and Grayson and Fannin Counties with five children and many grandchildren. The Grayson County Rural Civil and Fire Defense Plan organization is formed with Whitewright Bells Tom Bean Van Alstyne Howe Gunter Collinsville Whitesboro and Pottsboro plus Sherman and Denison fire departments.
Savoy voters overwhelmingly approved an urban renewal program with 61 of 62 ballots in a special election. Postmaster Claude Strickland said phase one, a new water well, would start in about two weeks, with future work including street construction and repairs. The program uses federal funds for utility improvements and is expected to be approved by the governing agency despite delays in funds. A separate note reports Kathlee Rutty, 26, freed after being wrongly detained in a London mental hospital along with 814 others.
Tulsa housewife Mary Ellen Davis, 32, set a world non stop talking record by gab bing for 94 and a half hours in a contest by KOME radio. She surpassed Sue Huron of Fayetteville North Carolina who held just over 92 hours. Davis earns prize money totaling 1200 dollars as two other entrants withdrew due to nervous exhaustion.
A 12 year old, Patsy Lewis, was struck by a stray .22 caliber bullet in Memphis. The bullet hit her chest but a package of chewing gum cushioned the impact, leaving her with only a slight bruise.
Uncle Dan from Tom Bean complains about unreliable delivery and rising costs. He mocks political paradoxes and jokes about sardines and kitchen kettles while noting a church magazine piece on girls bathing suits. He ends doubtful that such imagery can judge character.
The House rejected a farm bill aimed at lowering price supports and shaping farm policy, failing to reach the two-thirds threshold 210 to 186 under a take-it-or-leave-it rule. Supporters included 172 Democrats and 38 Republicans. opponents 38 Democrats and 148 Republicans. Chairman Harold Cooley said discussions would continue, while noting opposition to a Senate-pass bill. The Senate approach used market prices from the prior three years instead of parity.
President Eisenhower said business must curb price increases and labor should restrain wage hikes to avoid inflation. He warned consumers may rebel if prices keep rising and emphasized avoiding artificial controls. He stressed working people feel costs outpacing incomes.
Washington story questions whether the booming livestock sector may fall. Farm income is up with cattle and hog prices 25 to 35 percent higher than a year ago and slaughter receipts about 16 percent above last year.
The home of Mrs. Della King Stephens at Sears and Cedar streets burned about 1 p m Sunday. Embers from the blaze set the roof of R C Vestal’s building and the C J Meador estate rent house garage, but damage was light. A grass fire at American Legion Park and two more grass runs at H L Sanders pasture occurred in the same period with minimal damage.
Grayson County Commissioners Court on Tuesday named R. M. Noe Jr. of Denison as county juvenile officer to replace E. Clark who resigned to return to the automobile business. Noe, a Denison native, previously worked in the car business and the past two years at a local drug store. He is nephew of Miss Maggie Noe and Mrs. H. L. Crittenden of Whitewright.
A called Bethel Cemetery Association meeting at 2 30 p m appointed L L Windell as caretaker for August and September. Minutes from the prior meeting were read and approved. The group seeks the names of all persons with relatives buried there and asks these individuals to contact Weldon Bartley.
A Texas proposal would require motorists to show all property taxes paid before a vehicle license is issued in the future. Cities could adopt broad-based taxes such as income, sales, gross receipts, hotel occupancy, sewer charges, and vehicle license fees. A six-member committee will study details for a Houston conference, with outreach to legislators across districts to gain endorsement.
