Cotton burr grass fire threatens homes near town
Smoke covered the town last Wednesday as 15 acres of dry cotton burrs burned for hours stretching from Edwards Chevrolet to the West Texas Telephone Co site. Police Chief McClister and Don Williams fought the blaze until volunteers arrived, aided by two fire trucks and three water tanks. Fire guards, a ditch, and water spray contained it until 4 30 p m. The blaze jumped a guard and scorched signs near the ballpark and risked a nearby Boy Scout house. Tree stumps cleared recently likely sparked the fire.
