A wartime letter from an American Negro stevedore in Southwestern France describes close combat and brutal fighting. He writes to his Jacksonville, Florida lover Sue about battles with German troops, biting a Crown Prince and Kaiser figures until reinforcements arrive, while noting his simple tinware rations.
Dr. Wilbur Carter has returned from Fort Riley after an honorable discharge. Earlier last year he volunteered for service, contracted meningitis during training, and lingered near death for weeks. Officers believed recovery possible but not suitable for hard battlefield duties.
At the city hall last Saturday two o clock delegates to the county convention were chosen: W. H. Horton R. L. Holcomb J. N. Fain F. M. Echols J. T. Stillwell J. H. Waggoner J. L. Cantrell F. E. Alverson J. R. Andrews and R. B. Gordon Ben Savage was elected chairman for the precinct for another year A resolution by J. L. Cantrell appoints ten delegates to the county convention and directs them to vote as a unit The convention urges full attendance from Whitewright at the county gathering next Saturday.
Sherman Texas July 29 Representative Charles Spradley of Allen Collins county a candidate to succeed himself was jailed briefly Saturday on assault to murder charges from an attack on Ernest J Parker city editor of the Democrat He was released on bond of 2500 signed by S W Porter Ferguson campaign manager G O Caldwell L W McDonald Mr Broadhead and a Mr Allen He left for McKinney on the interurban car Parker’s wounds are not serious and he may return to work in about ten days
Notice is given that if a satisfactory price is obtained the Grayson College building and four acres of land in Whitewright Texas will be sold. Bids may be submitted in writing before September 1 1918. The board reserves the right to reject any bid. C B Bryant President Board of Trustees

The Sun raises rates due to a new war tax on mail matter and higher wartime costs. Effective September 1 the outside Grayson and Fannin counties pay 1.50 a year or 75 cents for six months, with advance payment required. Early renewals at old rates save fifty cents for a year.
Fort Worth authorities at Camp Bowie protest self styled military groups and Boy Scouts wearing uniforms similar to regular army attire. They announce intent to sue in Federal Court for violating a congressional act prohibiting civilians from wearing uniforms patterned after any military branch.
A Morris Maine couple, Mrs. Frank P. Wood and her husband, report Foley Kidney Pills relieved their lame back and rheumatic pains. The wife says both benefited and the husband could not stoop before, now feels no pain. Sold by Dyer & Jones.
The Honey Grove Signal extols Roosevelt as a great man for wiping tears at news of his son’s death in battle, praising his patriotism and willingness to do all for the flag. It lauds bravery, loyalty, and personal sacrifice during a time of war.
The Folded Arms Brigade named women who live off relatives’ insurance receipts learned another member joined when Dallas officials arranged payment of 10000 to a Dallas widow. The policy for her son, who died in France while serving, pays 240 installments of 57.50 plus 20 monthly under the widow’s compensation, totaling 77.50 a month. The son, a railroad construction worker, bought the policy two days before sailing and paid 6.60 in one premium. his sole beneficiary is his mother.
Mr. and Mrs. Lon Manning and their children are visiting Mineral Wells, enjoying a family outing and sightseeing during the trip.
The United States Government will launch a $6 billion Liberty Bond issue probably in the last days of September. The three week campaign will seek $2 billion weekly in subscriptions. Texas previously had a quota of $73,910,000 but surpassed it with $97,322,500, a 31.67 percent overage.
