A 1918 public appeal urges Grayson County farmers to sell all wheat above seed needs and not withhold grain for allies in France. It stresses patriotic duty, warns of aiding the enemy, and asks for names of holders to promote compliance.
Mrs. T. K. McMillin went back to her Trenton home Monday after a stay with relatives in the area.
The mayor secured further cuts in Whitewright insurance rates after a state report. A special inspector found no penalty for the water main from Brickleader Hotel to the oil mill and removed a five cent charge. The three cent fire department charge was also removed, and a tire marshal credit and new equipment credits were added. Overall key rate drops from 66 to 53 cents, saving residents over fifteen hundred dollars yearly with minimal city expense.
Senator William J. Stone of Missouri and long time head of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee died here today after a stroke suffered last week. He served in public life for 45 years and was known for balancing party loyalties during World War I, opposing the arming of merchant ships, and being part of the group derided as the willful twelve for their stand against the administration.
Walter Hestand, a revenue and tax collector for the United States, is in Hunt, Rockwall, and Collin counties for the next few weeks to oversee federal tax interests and duties. He is reported as visiting family in the area during his stay.
George Lendsey of Camp Bowie spent the first of the week visiting relatives. The brief hometown note highlights his trip and family connections.
W L Armstrong of Boswell Oklahoma died from injuries suffered in an automobile crash near J P Autrey’s residence three miles south of town. He had been to Dallas to buy a Ford and hired a local driver to handle it. The car struck a rock, rolled, and Armstrong sustained chest and shoulder injuries. He leaves a wife and one twelve year old son and was brother to Judge James R Armstrong of Oklahoma City. The body was sent to Boswell after services in Roswell.
The Federal Fuel Administrator for Texas warns private households to buy coal now to prevent next winter shortages. He notes current storage limits and says prices rise monthly from now through September, urging immediate orders for the winter of 2018-19.
The ninth annual Grayson County Odd Fellows Anniversary Association session will be in Van Alstyne on Friday 26th with delegates from twenty eight lodges. Hon S B Cowell will speak. Denison Rebekah degree team will confer on a large class. medals for secret work and Past Grand honors. The entertainment committee will accommodate visitors.
A brief forecast notes continued rain on Saturday with lingering showers and cooler temperatures. Forecasters urge precautions for outdoor activities and minor travel delays expected in coastal regions.
