PTA Association Kept Regular Meeting at Grammar School

The Parent Teacher Association met Tuesday afternoon in the Grammar School auditorium. Mrs. C. J. Meador chaired the session and the group voted to serve lunch to the American Legion on Sunday May 5. The stove in the lunch room was discussed for repair. The High School Glee Club led by Daniel Russ performed songs and Miss Lucyle Sanders spoke on Mental Fitness and Moral Stability. The sixth grade earned the room count for most parent attendees. The final meeting of the school year will be May 14.

Birthday Shower For Mrs Russell At Martha Class

The Martha Class of the Methodist Church gave a surprise birthday shower Sunday morning for Mrs J D Russell who celebrated her eightieth birthday. After Sunday school she returned home to a gathering of children and grandchildren with food and gifts and visitors including Mrs Della Clack of Gainesville making the day joyful for the honoree her family and friends.

Whitewright High debaters win county meet

Rotary guests heard Whitewright High School debate teams, boys C B Bryant III and Robert Emerson Sears and girls Laverne Kilgree and Dorothy Darwin, who won the county meet in Sherman and will represent Grayson County in the Dallas district meet. The teams are coached by H W Key. The debate asked if Texas should adopt universal medical care at public expense. Both sides were well presented.

Whitewright Debating Teams Poised to Win District Meet

After observing both sides in action, club members believe Whitewright’s two fine high school debating teams will prevail at the district meet. The community expects success in future contests as well.

Ben Bell serves as pastor with Sunday school at 10 a.m. led by superintendent N. L. Manning. Morning worship at 11 includes a sermon by the pastor. Young people meet at 6:30 p.m. and evening services start at 7:30 with another pastor’s sermon.

Porter News Community Sees Heavy Weekend Rain

The community experienced heavy rains Friday and Saturday. Social visits include Mrs. G. D. Bennett of Whitewright staying with relatives, J. W. Gunter and family in Bonham, and several local residents visiting family and friends in Whitewright Trenton Cooper and Cooper areas.

John W. Connelly of Trenton announces his candidacy for the Democratic nomination to the Texas Legislature. He backs social security funding, Old Age Pensions, a nine month school term, farm to market roads, and tax changes on natural resources to support public schools and state debt repayment. He urges voters to evaluate his platform and pledges cooperation with the governor and legislators.

Negro School Observes National Negro Health Week

The local Negro school joined nationwide observance of the 26th annual National Negro Health Week with talks by Ruth Musgrove on Life in General and Dr. C. A. Franklin, and a book review of Up From Slavery by Mrs. D. S. Boyd. Essay winners were James Smith, Joe H. Conley, Evelyn Dellis, Collene Hamilton, and Cathron Freeman. A ten-cent stamp honoring Booker T. Washington, first linked to Negro Health Week, was issued nationwide April 7.
