Austin March 30 rabies more virulent this year says Dr J T Wilhite director of the State Pasteur Institute. Eighty five patients on preventive hydrophobia treatment and 225 dog heads examined this month with 82 rabies cases. Twelve Bastrop residents among patients. Most bitten by dogs. some by house cats. Dr Wilhite urges killing stray dogs and penning others at home to curb rabies.

Liquor Inquirer Beaten by Gang in Denton
In Denton on March 30 a group of eight to ten men armed with pistols assaulted W. H. Burges, a special deputy sheriff, warning him to quit interfering with bootleggers fallen into last weeks liquor raids. The attack disrupted Burges while he conducted enforcement actions targeting illicit liquor operations.

Burges Brutally Attacked Near Home. Police Seek Suspects
Investigations into two cases have led to arrests. Burges was struck at least six times with pistols and left on the school grounds across from his rooms. He staggered to the street in front of his house about 11 pm Wednesday, nearly blinded by blood from scalp wounds, and fainted before reaching Sheriff Fry with a boy’s help. Three companions fled as pistols were drawn. no arrests by Thursday night.
