The Brilliante Slaver and a Coffin Trade at Sea
In 1840 off the African coast the clipper brig Brilliante commanded by Homans, a feared English slaver, ferried enslaved Africans to the Caribbean. After eluding pursuit by four cruisers, Homans executed a brutal plan binding six hundred captives to a heavy anchor and sinking them with the ship’s cable, leaving no witnesses but the deadly chain on his deck.
