A fragmentary poem by Reverend Charles Ring Set recounts Vioree Fishers and widows facing stormy seas and labor. Men work while women weep, corpses wash ashore, and a harbor unseen looms as merchants ride westward. The piece, from Leiden Panel, hints at social cost and loss.
An American in Mazatlan reports a siege by Liberal forces approaching two leagues away. Barracks and Governor’s quarters attacked. stores looted for tens of thousands of dollars, including foreign merchants and residents. Civilians hide valuables. foreigners guard goods at consulates. a brutal night of cannons, gunfire, and street raids ensues as Liberals fail to take the barracks.

Born in Canandaigua in 1812, he edited papers in Connecticut and Michigan before publishing Milwaukee Courier and Badger State. He suffered paralysis, died aged forty six years three months, with widow and child left behind, to be interred at Portage City.
A Buckeye writer in Paris describes a French coffee method heard in Boston. He explains percolation with a hollow revolving cylinder, fine ground coffee, a finely perforated pan over boiling water, and the addition of hot milk after infusion. Served in bowls with bread and sugar lumps, this method avoids boiling the coffee.
A Victorian observer details Siamese dress, hair, and social roles for girls and boys up to age twelve, noting lack of clothing in youth, extensive gold ornaments, and a distinct hair-cutting ceremony. It covers women’s domestic influence, status of the head wife, and examples of ceremonial visits, along with critique of betel chewing and tobacco use among all ages.
