Reminiscences of Whitewater settlers and mill plans

In October 1843 settlers faced land sales and rising anxieties over Shaw's mill. A meeting formed to force a mill on Whitewater creek within a year, with bonds and a ban on bidding unless a mill was promised. Dr Tripp bought the land and agreed to build a flour mill. local leaders drafted contracts, raised capital, and organized purchases. Progress of the Hoosac Tunnel Work

A Boston traveler reports the Hoosac Tunnel progress about twenty feet weekly with day and night shifts at the eastern end, and limited force at the western end. Wood and mule power form a rail within the tunnel for chips to build a dam across the Deerfield River, supplying water power, while a second mule pumps fresh air.
