Low Ohio river water falls short of full stage
Longstanding Ohio river notes record a persistently low water season near Wheeling and Pittsburgh. Ten inch depths near Mountain Landing and a dry riverbed around Wheeling Island spark fears of a worsening trend. Packet companies face reduced service and revenue as low water stalls excursions and sailings, while advocates push a proposed stilps canal to connect Lake Era with the Ohio river to stabilize navigation and boost upper valley commerce.

One of the handsomest exhibits last week was Mendel & Co.’s new undertaking wagon in Machinery Hall. Painted black throughout, the bed is enclosed for casket and equipment. It is praised as a light, strong, beautiful model and among the first of its kind manufactured. The State Fair display drew thousands of visitors. The same issue notes the Mutual German Savings and Loan Association’s business since May 1, 1504, with 7,212 shares sold totaling $721,200, $40,000 in loans, and strong credibility for investors and borrowers. It urges deposits and favorable interest, urging inquiries at the Home Office, Room body Building. The page also advertises a used upright piano and various items for sale at The Leader, 1020 Anim.

An aged stranger checked into Huseman House on Water Street during the fair. He was found unconscious with a partially used bottle of laudanum and no papers to identify him. A crucifix tattoo and images on his arms, plus a rule and nails in his pockets, offer few clues as to his identity as he weakened through the night.
