James Barton reports on an inventor offering a traveling crematory for battlefields. The device, claimed to reduce a body to ashes within an hour, is designed to be transported by train or wagon, with detachable parts for easy movement. Proponents argue sanitary benefits, relief to grieving families, and faster disposal of battlefield dead, while noting safety and military adoption questions.
In this section a German inventor Gustave Sobli unveils a traveling crematory designed to incinerate bodies up to 1,200 degrees, with an iron oven on wheels, glass slides for viewing, and a process that reduces a body to ashes quickly. The piece discusses methods, costs, safety, and potential wartime use while contrasting with traditional burial. It shifts to a domestic scene of Nancy and Abby, Nancy awaiting Jim Wilmot and reflecting on lost time, snowbound hardship, and a plan for a future together.
