A massive Wheeling gathering celebrated Democracy with three stirring speeches by prominent men. The crowd, numbering in the thousands, filled streets to honor Hendricks and the party, with displays and a parade marking the day in the city’s political annals.
The Gaylight Parade in Wheeling showcased banners and transparencies featuring slogans and cartoons about Blaine and Cleveland. Officials and visiting clubs marched along a wide route through Market and Chapline, drawing crowds as governors and local leaders rode in carriages, while workers and vendors distributed goods and waved to spectators.
A large crowd at the fairgrounds cheers as Thomas A. Hendricks arrives with Governor Jackson and others. He defends Democratic tax policy, arguing for reduced taxation and balanced public needs, and contrasts it with Republican fiscal claims while urging support for Hendricks as future Vice President.
Massive crowds from Belmont and neighboring counties lined the streets to welcome Blaine. A decorated procession and illuminated displays stretched from Gravel Hill to Pinch Run as Blaine’s party, including Hon. John H. Ewing and Lorenzo Danford, entered the city amid cheers and drum contrasts. Blaine spoke from the central square, urging tariff protection and noting Ohio’s growth and industrial progress as proof of policy impact.
