Soldier's Letter From a Civil War Front Frontline Memory

A long fragmentary reminiscence describes a Civil War siege with detailed marching, skirmishes, and a dramatic rescue. The narrator recounts battles, bivouac nights, and a perilous return through rebel lines, including a pivotal encounter at a mansion where a Confederate officer assists wounded Union soldiers and a romantic weave with Miss Tremaine and Goldie. The piece blends battlefield action with intimate moments of mercy and attachment amid the conflict.
