Fort defending settlers by women on frontier siege
In 1867 near the White Man’s Fork of the Republican river a frontier cabin with eight men and two women faced a two hundred strong Indian raid. Mrs. Wellman led seven women and children inside the log fort as Little Bear demanded surrender. They repelled repeated assaults for three days with rifles, revolvers, and water-filled barriers, then were relieved by soldiers. The defense was hailed as the bravest in frontier history.
