A library building on the Late University block burned after a lightning strike at 4 a.m. A two story brick structure housed the library on the second floor and the physics lab on the first. Losses totaled about 50 000 in cash, 17 000 in apparatus, and 33 000 for the building. Much of the Talbotian collection of 4 500 volumes, dating to the early 1500s, was destroyed. Special to the Register from Charleston reports Clark Lewis and Albert Vokres found guilty of first degree murder in the April 18, 1896, Charles Gibson case in Montgomery. Jerry Brown, a negro, convicted of rape against Mrs. Ike Radford. The trio strangled Gibson in bed, moved him to a mine entrance, then returned for loot. Virgie Gibson implicated, jealousy and alleged affairs cited. Montgomery gang linked to multiple crimes in Kanawha and New River valleys.
John Hinson admitted guilt but did not participate and was discharged as State's evidence. Jerry Brown convicted of rape for entering Mrs. Ike Radford's home near Mt. Carbon in January and sentenced to die. Martha Kirby and Manfred Nelson shown not connected to the murder.
Special to the Register reports Eastham remains held for the killing of Frank Thomson as the grand jury returns involuntary slaughter. The court denies entering a nolle and considers habeas issues under new law. Irregularities in indictment are cited as grounds for reconsideration and further action.
Special to the Resistor reports the accidental death of William Hall son of Deputy U.S. Marshal H. C. Hall in Williamson County Virginia during a raid on a distillery. Hall was carrying a shotgun when it discharged, blowing off the top of his skull.
Judge Henry grants a divorce to Colonel C. B. Dyer from W. M. Dyer in Kansas City. Mrs. Dyer may use her maiden name Ida M. Casey and keep alimony and the home at Trust Avenue. Dyer, once linked to Jarvis-Conklin Trust, later led Augusta Georgia street railway. Mrs. Dyer, daughter of Dr Newton Casey of Mound City, wrote Fort Reno and contributed to papers. The couple had previously divorced and remarried. In Havana, a Madrid dispatch notes eight million three hundred thousand dollars paid by Spanish parents to redeem sons from Cuba and Philippines service, funds now to navy. New torpedoes are placed at major Cuban port entrances.
