Rooftop amusements and the rise of New York roof gardens
A historical column surveys New York roof gardens from casino era to Madison Square Garden, tracing how open air venues on theater roofs and tenement tops drew crowds for music, drinks, and vaudeville. It notes class differences, fortunes tied to entertainment, and the cultural shift toward canopy and skyward leisure. It also chronicles performers, trends, and public reactions to these elevated entertainments.
