From Cooney Island to a raft of imagination and nostalgia

A sprawling, fragmentary reminiscence blends fashion notes and a tale of Mickey Finn building a raft to save a nanny goat and goslings on Brown's pond. The piece shifts to moral vignettes, lessons on dress, a mock Sunday-school dialogue, and stray scenes of urban small-talk, all evoking a turn‑of‑the‑century readership.
