A devastating Kanawha and Michigan Railroad wreck near Charleston West Virginia kills and injures many. Famed residents and workers, including Col W B Fife and Walter Welcher, perish or suffer grave injuries as a broken trestle dumps cars onto the line. Rescue efforts March to aid the injured amid mourning and funeral plans.
Jefferson county Democrats met at the Court House and nominated H. H. Threusmaan for secretary and C. S. Beard for treasurer. They adopted resolutions praising James E. Campbell, urging fair taxation and denouncing federal tax and spending. Delegates and alternates to the State Convention were named, and the group urged renominating Governor Campbell.
A report from West Virginia dated July 4 describes the wreck scenes where bodies aboard the cars were being removed. Only two survivors, the engineer and fireman, are named along with a postal passenger, while the tank tank remains.
