Thurlay Grove Riot Held Under Prolonged Hearing
A protracted hearing at Kimmins Hall Elm Grove last night examined a Friday night riot at Chambers stores during pay day at the coal works. Officials and witnesses described fistfights between miners and strikers, pick handles flashed, and a stone or pistolshot feared by some. Several arrests were made, including Nickeson, Sweeney, Lohman and others, with Squire Arkle presiding and later actions against W. Y. Chambers for assault. The case exposed labor tensions and a plan to continue operations without union recognition, with authorities hinting at sheriff involvement if needed.
