Elmer H. Cox, once living as a hermit on Victory Mountain near St. Johnsbury Vermont, hid from the draft, deserted from Camp Devens after two weeks in 1918, ate bark and berries, slept in trees, and avoided tracks. He later surrendered and is under observation in a hospital. A passerby reported him to authorities and he was jailed.
