Move to tax beer under nonintoxicating cereal beverages plan

A national movement asks Congress to shift taxes from the public to nonalcoholic beer by enabling beer with 2.75 percent alcohol to be manufactured and sold. Proposals aim to raise the revenue from 1.0 to 1.25 billion dollars. Prof Seligman voices cautious support for taxing beer and light wines without repealing Prohibition. Experts estimate 90 to 120 million barrels could be consumed if beer runs at 2 percent alcohol.
