Cardinal of Montpellier Missed Legion Honor Thirty Years Ago

Cardinal De Cabrieres of Montpellier learned he was to have been made a Legion of Honor thirty years ago but religious scruples prevented him from accepting. At a university banquet a minister placed the decoration under his napkin as a surprise. He did not touch the food or unfold the napkin, and the honor was thought declined. The error is now corrected and he is named officer of the Legion.

Congress Seeks Deeper Cuts to Army and Navy

In Washington the push to reduce military strength continues as lawmakers plan to curtail the army and navy beyond current fiscal year minima. The President must submit December budget estimates including armed forces funding, with prior deep reductions already made to 150,000 army troops and sizable naval cuts.
