United States Slicing Machine threatens Laporte move
Laporte July 10. John C Woodington president of United States Slicing Machine Co warns the firm may relocate to Chicago if tax assessments on its personal property do not rise proportionally with other factories. The board of review raised its assessment from 12,000 to 260,000 then cut to 100,000, increasing taxes by about 4,000 a year, prompting the threat and noting other local firms also saw steep increases. The company, employing about 350, built a model factory in 1914 and would be a serious loss to Laporte if it leaves.
