President Wilson addresses Congress outlining a program to curb private monopoly, interlockings of directors, and the power of railroads. He calls for an Interstate Trade Commission to define and enforce anti trust laws and to hold individuals accountable rather than the corporate body.
An all day search failed to locate the sunken British submarine A 7 off Whitsand bay Plymouth England January 19 11 sailors trapped as oxygen runs out and rescue attempts continue. Lieut Gilbert M Welman and crew of 11 presumed dead with crews aboard other submarines aiding in the search. The A 7 built 1904 is sixth of its class to be lost prompting debate on adopting newer C and D class boats.
In Columbus Ohio on January 17 the state senate killed a bill requiring male applicants for marriage licenses to present satisfactory medical certificates. The measure aimed to restrict marriages through health proof, but was defeated in the chamber.
James Bennie Gilchrist of Canton Missouri died from a wound received while interfering in a quarrel after earning Carnegie Medal and $1000 for saving three men in a mine explosion incident. He had previously been honored for bravery in the same event.
In Michigan Houghton County prosecutors say Charles H. Moyer president of the Western Federation of Miners and six others face extradition if they fail to return for trial on conspiracy charges tied to the copper strike. The house rules committee in Washington declines a congressional strike investigation, deeming it a matter for the senate and state authorities to handle. The indictment, filed January, charges conspiracy to use force to hinder mining company operations. the misdemeanor count targets the federation officials.
Col George W W Goethals is to be the permanent governor of the Panama canal zone with near autocratic power over 2500 operating personnel. The decision was learned on high authority in Washington. He will govern to avoid politics and a cumbersome commission.
President Wilson sent to the senate the nomination of Col. Gorgas for surgeon general of the army to succeed the late Surgeon General Torney. Gorgas now heads the sanitation department in the Panama Canal Zone and his nomination recognizes his services there.
William Cul sentative in congress from Illinois and organizer of the Republican party died in Ottawa on Saturday January 19.
Geologist Okada predicts Sakura Jima will erupt for a month as ash falls and lava deserts seven tenths of the island. About 15 hundred of 2,000 houses buried, damage estimated at 5 million dollars. In Tokyo an official reports 9,000 of 19,000 residents accounted for, with 10,000 feared dead.
In Concord Judge Edgar Aldrich refused immediate bail for Harry K. Thaw, delaying bail until the habeas corpus hearing. Thaw’s lawyers gain 20 days to file briefs as they seek legal precedent. Simultaneously in New York William Travers Jerome received threatening letters urging him to stop pressuring Thaw’s return to Matteawan.
London reports the National Union of Woman's Suffrage Societies will maintain persistent campaign in 1914. It plans a February council to map strategy and a mass meeting at Albert Hall on February 14 to push for a constitutional government measure granting women's suffrage.
Boston January 19 reports indicate the five masted schooner Fuller Palmer was abandoned in a sinking condition. All hands were saved and are en route to Baltimore aboard a steamer that rescued them.
San Francisco January 19. The light weight championship match between Willie Ritchie and Harlem Tommy Murphy, set for January 30, was canceled by promoter Harry Foley. The cancellation ends a long awaited fixture in the ring.
Seven men die and one woman is wounded during a prison escape attempt at the Oklahoma state penitentiary in McAlester. Prisoners Reed Lane and Kuntz seize guards and a stenographer Mary Foster to flee in a buggy. guards and a pursuing posse engage them on the road, with all three convicts killed. Judge Thomas, a former congressman, is among the victims.
Albany January 21 The Delaware & Hudson strike ending after a Monday walkout involved about 5000 workers. Officials met demands to reinstate two discharged employees engineer James A Lynch and conductor F A Slade. G W W Hanger of the mediation board brokered a settlement, arbitration rejected. All strikers will return to duty immediately as orders go out for crews to report and resume runs.
