A kindly stranger muses that perhaps the man’s true home is the hills and altitudes of Colorado but the tale ends with uncertainty about the future destination.

Admiral David D. Porter died in Washington on the first of the month from fatty degeneration of the heart. Born in Pennsylvania in 1818, he joined the navy as a midshipman in 1829, rose to lieutenant in 1841, and served in the Mexican War and Civil War. He led ships during the gold rush era and was superintendent of the Naval Academy until 1869, later appointed Admiral of the Navy in 1870. He authored life of Commodore Porter and several Civil War works.
