The 161st Indiana Volunteer Infantry, led by Col. Durbin, received high praise from Maj. Gen. Arnold after a Havana review. The regiments displayed excellent discipline and appearance, while the absence of Cuban spectators contrasted with American interest. A new monument near Durbin’s tent attracted attention as the Maine memory issue sparked debate.
