Steward of Prison Durbin Dies in Michigan City
David S. Durbin aged 73 a Civil War veteran and longtime prison steward at the state penitentiary for eighteen years died at his Michigan City home after five months of illness. Born December 15 1840 in Lawrenceburg he later served as first lieutenant in the Thirteenth Indiana infantry. Survived by widow and three sons George of Indianapolis and Robert and Sherwood of Michigan City. Funeral and burial were in Indianapolis.

The manuscript department received 12 259 manuscripts from teachers examined for licenses during the year ending September 31. Of these, 5 858 or 47.7 percent were successful. High school manuscripts numbered 2 728 with 1 980 successful, common school manuscripts 7 890, supervisor manuscripts 1 641, 12 month license seekers passing 1 793, and supervisor manuscripts successful 1 113.
